The Atari 2600 game console came
out in 1977. By today's standard it had a relatively simple
processor, and was very limited in the amount of software
code it could run in "real-time". Because the game cartridge
consisted of only a 4K memory chip, game designs were fairly
simple and usually the work of a single programmer. Today's
consoles, such as the Xbox 360 and PS3, have tremendous
processing power and can run games with very detailed
graphics and elaborate story lines. The days of the single
programmer writing binary code are gone, and they've been
replaced by large production teams that would rival that of
a Hollywood movie.
